About this place
The Ahmed Shawky Museum, known as Karmet Ibn Hani, takes you into the literary world of the Prince of Poets, inside his historic home overlooking the Nile Corniche in Giza. The house became a public museum in 1977 and is now one of the leading literary museums documenting the life of Ahmed Shawky and his contribution to modern Arabic poetry.
The museum holds a large collection of the poet’s belongings, including furniture, paintings, antiques and photographs, as well as medals, ceremonial dress, gifts and documents relating to his life and his recognition as Prince of Poets. The house also preserves something of the atmosphere of Shawky’s home and library, giving visitors an insight into the personal and creative life of one of Egypt’s greatest poets.
The museum is located at 6 Ahmed Shawky Street, opposite Giza Zoo, and is known for its Nile view and its garden, which features a bronze statue of the poet by the artist Gamal El-Segini. It also includes a cultural centre established as part of its development, so the house continues to serve as a space for culture and literature as well as a historic museum.
