About this place
The Egyptian Postal Museum takes you on a journey through the history of post and letters in Egypt, from the earliest forms of communication and correspondence to the development of modern postal services. The museum is housed in the historic post office building on Ataba Square in the heart of Cairo and dates back to 1934, when it was established to preserve the history and collections of the Egyptian postal service and document its development over time.
Its halls hold a varied collection of objects and documents illustrating the development of writing, letters and the means of carrying mail, together with stamps, tools, postal uniforms, maps and models linked to the history of the Postal Authority. One section covers the history of international postal conferences and agreements, while the airmail section displays models and material documenting the early days of carrying letters by air.
A visit to the museum reveals a different side of the history of Cairo and its institutions, as stamps, letters, post boxes and everyday working tools become witnesses to the development of society and communication over more than a century. Located on Ataba Square in Downtown Cairo, the museum makes a good stop on a tour of Khedivial Cairo and the surrounding historic area.
