The Abdeen Palace Museum is one of Cairo’s leading historical museums. It is housed inside Abdeen Palace, one of the most important royal palaces in the country, which witnessed a great deal of Egypt’s modern history. The museum holds a varied collection of royal possessions, weapons, antiques and documents that reflect the history of the Muhammad Ali dynasty and life inside Egypt’s palaces.

History of Abdeen Palace

Abdeen Palace dates back to the reign of Khedive Ismail, who ordered it built in the 19th century as the seat of government and the official residence of the ruling family. Construction began in 1863 and took several years, and the palace became one of the most important royal residences in Cairo. Its site was chosen close to central Cairo, in an area then known as Abdeen.

The palace became the seat of power from Khedive Ismail’s time onwards and witnessed many important political and historical events that shaped modern Egypt.

Why is it called Abdeen Palace?

The palace takes its name from Abdeen Bey, a military commander under Muhammad Ali Pasha who owned a small palace in the area. After Abdeen Bey’s death, Khedive Ismail had the old palace demolished and a grand royal palace built in its place, and the new palace kept the name Abdeen in his memory.

The palace also holds a collection of silverware and silver objects once used in the palace, as well as gifts and other items that reflect royal life and official protocol at the time.

Some pieces stand out for their intricate designs and decoration, showing the high level of craftsmanship of the era.

Abdeen Palace and modern Egyptian history

The palace is linked to many key events in modern Egyptian history: as the seat of government, it saw political meetings and decisions over many different periods.

The most famous of these is the Abdeen incident of 1881, when Ahmed Urabi marched to the palace with a group of officers and soldiers to demand reforms, an event that became a milestone in Egypt’s political history.
