Abbassia sits in a strategic spot in Cairo, close to several major districts, so it is easy to reach by many forms of transport. The neighbourhood is also linked to main roads and streets that make getting in and out of the area straightforward.
Why Is It Called Abbassia?
The name Abbassia comes from Khedive Abbas Hilmi I, who ruled Egypt from 1848 to 1854. The area was named after him when he chose to build a palace there, at a time when the site lay outside Cairo’s main urban boundaries.
As Cairo grew and building spread around the palace, the name Abbassia came to be used for the whole surrounding area, and it stuck as the neighbourhood continued to develop over the following decades.
