Who was Al-Salih Tala'i ibn Ruzzik?

Al-Salih Tala'i ibn Ruzzik rose to prominence in the last years of the Fatimid state and became vizier at a time of weak central authority and frequent conflict. Even so, his name is tied to an important building: the Mosque of al-Salih Tala'i near Bab Zuweila, at the southern edge of Fatimid Cairo.

The mosque represents a late stage of Fatimid architecture and shows that the traditions of religious building continued right up to the years before power passed to the Ayyubids.

How did they shape Cairo?

The mosque's position matters as much as its architecture. It stands close to Bab Zuweila, in an area that later became a Mamluk hub with the Mosque of al-Mu'ayyad Shaykh, markets and main roads. Al-Salih Tala'i's legacy thus becomes part of a scene where the end of the Fatimid period sits next to the beginnings of the eras that followed.

Its location helps visitors read Cairo's historical change without moving between distant neighbourhoods.
