About this place

The Egyptian Geology Museum takes you on a different kind of journey through the history of the Earth, with a wide collection of rocks, minerals and fossils that reveal part of Egypt’s natural resources and geological make-up. The museum was established in 1901 and opened to the public on 1 December 1904, making it one of the oldest specialist museums in the Arab world and the Middle East.

The galleries hold varied collections of Egyptian minerals and ores, along with gemstones, amber and shells, and the museum also displays samples of igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary rocks. These exhibits offer a chance to learn about Egypt’s geological diversity in a way that combines museum display with scientific information.

Among the museum’s highlights are its collections of vertebrate and invertebrate fossils, including fossils of animals that lived in different geological eras, with a notable presence of fossils discovered in the Fayoum area. The museum also holds a meteorite that fell in the village of Nakhla in Beheira Governorate in 1908, one of the rare meteorites of Martian origin.

The Egyptian Geology Museum is located on the Nile Corniche in Maadi, Cairo, and alongside its galleries it has a library with references, some dating back to 1778, as well as specialist laboratories for studying minerals, rocks and fossils. It is a good destination for families, students and anyone who wants to discover the history of the Earth and Egypt’s geological wealth in an educational and enjoyable way.
