About this place

The National Police Museum at the Citadel of Salah El-Din offers a different look at an important side of Egypt’s history, documenting the development of the Egyptian police and its role across successive periods, from ancient Egypt to the modern era. The museum is in the northern part of the Citadel, next to the Military Museum, making it part of a complete cultural and historical experience at one of Cairo’s best-known landmarks.

The museum’s halls hold a wide range of weapons, uniforms, tools, documents and photographs linked to the history of the police, along with halls devoted to policing in ancient Egypt and the Islamic era, the development of uniforms and weapons, the Battle of Ismailia and some famous cases and crimes. There is also a section of historic fire engines and firefighting equipment, including vehicles from different periods.

The Police Museum opened in 1986 and was renovated and reopened in 2013. Its building is closely tied to the history of the Citadel and rests on the Mamluk Lions’ Tower (Burg Al-Siba), one of the site’s distinctive architectural features. A visit is a chance to learn about Egypt’s security and social history in the historic setting of the Citadel.
